7 DIY amazing natural sunscreens for hair (Guide)

Don't let summer catch you unprepared. Find out how to ensure that beautiful days at sea don't turn into a nightmare for your hair!

Did you know that some natural oils contain SPF protection in themselves?

Hi girls! As promised in this article, I will show you all the recipes to make hair natural sunscreens in your kitchen. Obviously, the preparation will be simple and fast because each of us prefers to spend the summer at the sea rather than in the kitchen preparing hair products!

Moreover, for those girls that have now to much time, I will show some items that are ready to buy. I tried the products we are going to talk about myself and was really satisfied with.

As always, I will talk about both products to protect natural hair and colored hair, so that everyone can choose which tips better suit his or her own needs.

How many types of sun rays are there?

So, first of all, it is good to know the type of rays that act on the hair.

In this regard, we distinguish between UVC, UVA and UVB rays.

UVC rays

The acronym UVC stands for “ultraviolet” rays that, although we initially neglected because the atmosphere absorbs them, today, it has been discovered that they are increasing considerably and moreover, they are very harmful to our health.

UVA rays

The acronym UVA indicates about 95 percent of ultraviolet rays that penetrate deep into our body. It is no coincidence that the ‘A’ of the abbreviation stands for ‘age’ and ‘allergies’. What does it mean? This indicates that UVA rays are responsible for:

  1. Photoaging: these rays, penetrating deep into our body, strike and damage the elastin and collagen fibers in our skin and in our hair. This is results in aging and loss of skin tone and the dryness of our hair.
  2. Solar intolerances commonly referred to as “allergies”, such as redness and itching.

However, UVA rays do not only cause superficial damage, in fact, but the redness and the itching also appear as small annoyances, since these rays are the main factors in long-term and serious internal damage, such as skin cancer. UVA are present at any time of day, but the maximum level occur in the early morning and early afternoon, and they are more present when we go to the beach or the mountain, so the high does not matter, UVA will be there. They also do not encounter resistance in their propagation, which is why even the common sunscreens are powerless to these rays. This means that to prevent their harmful effects, the only remedy is to not expose yourself to the sun at these times of the day.

UVB rays

The abbreviation UVB indicates about five percent of ultraviolet rays. They have superficial influences on the skin, which is why the abbreviation ends with the letter ‘B’, which stands for ‘burning’ and ‘bronze’. Now, let’s see what it means. These rays, acting superficially, are responsible for burns, sun rashes, and of course, if we expose ourselves too much to these rays, these can also lead to very serious diseases such as skin cancer. However, these are also the actual tanning rays, in that, by reaching particular cells of the dermis, called “melanocytes”, they help these cells produce melanin, responsible for tanning.  This type of ray also has great benefits for our body because they help with the production of vitamin D, produced under our skin. This vitamin is defined as “antirachitic” and it helps against rickets, the disease that makes our bones very fragile.

Which oil should I use to prepare perfect natural hair sunscreens?

Before going on to talk about the recipes for protective hair products, it is good to specify that to achieve optimal results, we are going to use oils with SPF protection as ingredients.

The abbreviation above, SPF, is nothing but the abbreviation of the phrase “Sun Protection Factor“, which refers to natural substances that offer protection from sun rays such as:

  • Red raspberry seed oil

SPF from 28 to 50. They have high levels of omega 3 and omega 6, but also natural antioxidants and vitamin E.

  • Carrot seed oil

SPF from 38 to 40. It is an essential oil with antiseptic, antioxidant properties and contains a lot of vitamin A.

  • Wheat germ oil

SPF equal to 20. It is one of the best sources of vitamin E and is very rich in vitamin K.

  • Soybean oil

SPF 4 to 15. Contains high amounts of essential fatty acids, proteins, calcium, and iron.

  • Macadamia oil.

SPF equal to 6. It is obtained from macadamia nuts, originating in Australia, rich in iron, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin E, containing a high level of cinnamic acid, responsible for the high degree of protection provided by this oil.

  • Jojoba oil

SPF equal to 4. Coming from the deserts that stretch between California and Mexico, this plant was used as a food in rituals, but also as a medicine to treat skin, thanks to its highly nutritious and protective properties.

Natural oils with a low SPF

Among the other oils with low SPF content, we find the common sesame seed oil, karitè butter, olive oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, and hemp seed oil. They always have an SPF power, therefore some protection, even if their effectiveness is not high, as they have a very low SPF power, equal to 4; and coconut oil, which has an SPF equal to 4-5.

However, it is of fundamental importance to underline that these oils have an SPF power that exclusively shields UVB rays, while it does not offer any significant protection from UVA rays. In fact, to obtain protection from the latter, it is necessary to combine these natural oils with other kinds of protection, such as hats, headbands, and scarves if you want to avoid chemicals and oxidizers elements.

How to use natural sunscreens for hair

Before starting to talk about some recipes for natural protective hair creams, I would like to remind you that these should be applied to the hair before we dive in seawater or in the pool. Surely you are wondering why, so I’ll explain: dry hair absorbs many more harmful substances present in the pool or the sea, such as salt and chlorine, which dry and burn the hair. Therefore, it is good to moisten your hair and apply the protection to avoid absorbing harmful substances.

Girls, don’t forget, it’s important to protect your hair for the entire summer season! Sun damages our hair not only at the beach or when we are at the pool, but even when we go on trips or if we simply go out for a walk, especially during the hottest hours, hair is constantly exposed to damage. Also, do not forget that the natural hair sunscreens must be applied at least 20 minutes before exposure to the sun so that the hair absorbs the protection.

Moreover, in order to have the maximum effectiveness of the product, it is good to repeat the application every two, or a maximum of three hours, all day long.

7 DIY natural sunscreens for hair that will become your favorites

Let us now turn to the preparation of some formidable recipes for natural hair sunscreens. We will talk about creams and protective sprays, that are completely natural and easy to make at home.

I tried all these natural hair sunscreens myself and trust me, they work!

Sunscreen with coconut oil, avocado, and aloe vera

  • 27 ml of coconut oil
  • 14 ml of avocado
  • 10 grams of aloe vera gel
  • 40 ml of water

  • Obtain an empty spray bottle
  • Insert the mixture and shake to mix the elements completely
  • Apply to hair

It is possible to apply the product both on damp hair, but also directly on dry hair since it is not greasy. We can apply either directly on the hair, but also on the hands and in both cases, it is then massaged to promote maximum absorption of the product. The application of the product 20 minutes before sun exposure is essential to the maximum protection.

Goodbye frizzy hair and welcome disciplined and hydrated hair.

Sunscreen with olive oil and melon

  • 50 grams of melon
  • 20 grams of extra virgin olive oil

  • Take an empty container
  • Insert the mixture inside and mix to obtain a well-blended product
  • Apply to hair

Apply the mixture to wet hair and after shampooing. Leave for at least 10 minutes, then proceed to rinse with cold water.

Say goodbye to dry hair and welcome hydrated hair.

Sunscreen with jojoba oil, egg yolk, honey and cognac

  • A tablespoon of wheat germ oil
  • A teaspoon of jojoba oil
  • One egg yolk
  • A teaspoon of honey
  • A teaspoon of cognac

  • Take an empty container
  • Insert the products inside and mix in order to obtain a homogeneous mixture
  • Apply the product on the hair

Since the mixture is very liquid, it should be spread with a brush and after a light shampoo. Finally, wrap the hair in a damp cloth and leave the mask on for at least 20 minutes.

Say goodbye to frizzy hair and welcome shiny and hydrated hair.

Sunscreen with yogurt, honey and apple cider vinegar

  • 100 grams of whole white yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 40 ml of warm water (between 20 and 22°C)
  • 20 drops of lavender essential oil
  • Cassia Italica powder or Cassia Obovata, commonly known as ‘neutral henna’

  • Take a container
  • Mix the mixture inside the container until maximum amalgamation
  • Apply the product

Apply the product on damp hair, spread well until it’s on the skin. The product should be kept on during sun exposure and the hair should be rinsed after returning home

Neutral henna serves to protect the hair from the sun, as it strengthens the hair and makes it shine. It also has excellent flaming power, as it soothes skin irritations and eliminates frizz.

Sunscreen with rice oil, castor oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil

  • 20 grams of rice oil
  • 4 gr of castor oil
  • 40 gr of coconut oil
  • 15 gr of jojoba oil
  • 20 gr of sesame oil
  • 1 gr of tocopherol
  • 10 drops of essential oil of sweet orange

  • Obtain a container for a dose of 100 ml of product
  • Pour all the compounds into the container, but be careful, for perfect oil maintenance, it is necessary to have a completely dry container and pour the tocopherol last
  • Proceed to hair application

  • Moisten the lengths and ends of the hair
  • Pour a few drops of the mixture on your hands
  • Apply to wet hair and massage

Repeat each time you dive in the pool or seawater since this takes the product away from the hair, and especially after rinsing the hair with fresh water.

Say goodbye to damaged hair and welcome restructured hair. In fact, the oils used to make these sprays and creams have a restructuring and protective power.

Sunscreen with coconut oil, jojoba oil and aloe vera

  • 40 ml of water
  • 25 ml of coconut oil
  • 25 ml of jojoba oil
  • 20 grams of aloe vera gel

  • Insert the ingredients into a spray bottle
  • Shake well to get a well-blended mixture
  • Apply to hair

Apply the product about every three hours, but always on hair rinsed with freshwater, after immersion in the sea or in the pool.

CAUTION!! The lotion can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three days, after which it loses its effectiveness, which is why we advise against making excessive quantities of the product.

Sat goodbye frizzy hair and welcome healthy, bright and hydrated hair.

Sunscreen with coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil and vanilla stick

  • Coconut oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Argan oil
  • Vanilla stick

  • Take an empty bottle
  • Pour in the coconut oil to ¾ of the bottle
  • Fold the vanilla stick into two parts and insert it into the bottle
  • Add the jojoba oil to fill the bottle
  • Insert 2 drops of Argan oil
  • Close in a bottle with a spray cap
  • Stir well to obtain a completely blended mixture

Apply the product directly on the tips, using the sprayer.

CAUTION!! Do not use too much of the product, or repeat the administration more than twice a day because the amount of oil will make the hair greasy.

Obviously, the oils used are interchangeable, the important thing is to respect the doses. Above all,  it is possible to add two drops of essential oils to give the product a stronger fragrance, although I personally prefer not to use other fragrances because I love feeling the original scent of the products I make!

But today, I will tell you much more!

Besides these recipes that I have listed, which require preparation, although very fast, I will also talk about some natural remedies to protect our hair and which really only require a second.

On the beach, it may be useful to have plant filters on hand that can be immediately applied to the hair, such as:

  1. Shea butter and the avocado that deeply nourishes the hair and repairs it, without making the skin greasy. For the application, just heat a small quantity of product, equal to a teaspoon in your hands, and then apply it on the hair.
  2. Macadamia germ oil, coconut oils, linseed oil, and Argan oil, which, having emollient properties, make the hair shiny and silky
  3. Birch and horsetail:
  • Horsetail is taken orally, twice a day, between meals and for at least two months, 20 drops in half a glass of water;
  • Glycerine macerate is used in birch: 70 drops, once a day, a quarter of an hour before breakfast

In addition to these tips, in order to have hydrated, soft and shiny hair, you also need to be careful about food because, although it may seem trivial, eating excessive fatty foods and drinking little makes the scalp greasy. A diet that contributes to giving us impeccable hair requires the consumption of at least two liters of water a day and the intake of different portions of fruit and vegetables during the day. Good habits that, among other things, are good for our whole body and not only for our hair!

It is also extremely important that I tell you that these products, is made with completely natural and delicate oils, can also be used by those who have dyed hair, which is therefore considerably more delicate.

What if I don’t have time to make these natural hair sunscreens myself?

Obviously, there will also be extremely busy times for girls, finding time to themselves in the kitchen to make these cosmetics becomes extremely difficult. This is why I will also list products purchasable directly that I had the opportunity to try and with which I was completely satisfied.

  • Castor oil

This oil protects quite good from the sun (SPF 6), moreover, it helps hair growth, to strengthen, thicken and repair damaged hair.

  • Red raspberry seed oil

SPF from 28 to 50. Organic Rosehip Seed Oil can have a slight fishy smell and this is normal. If you do not like the smell you can mix it with some essential oil in order to cover the rosehip oil smell.  This oil can reduce dandruff and itching of the scalp. I personally like it very much. It can be used as a moisturizing cream, hair growth serum, and natural scar removal.

  • Macadamia oil.

SPF equal to 6. This oil will help you to maintain healthy glowing hair. Macadamia oil is known to absorb quickly into the hair, leaving a light, velvety, protective barrier.

  • Carrot seed oil

SPF from 38 to 40.  The carrots seed oil has lots of benefits and different uses.

This oil is antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-aging, gastroprotective and anti-inflammatory.

  • Coconut oil

SPF 4-5. This oil contains antioxidants. Because of his low SPF protection maybe it is not the best solution to protect your hair from the sun. However, coconut oil has millions of other beneficial properties such as:

  • stimulating hair growth
  • it is amazing against dandruff
  • coconut oil helps to moisturize dry hair
  • it makes hair shiny and soft
  • prevents hair breaking and split ends
  • last but not least it slows down hair loss.

Then, if you combine coconut oil with some other oils with a huger SPF protection (which is what usually I do), your hair will love it!😍

  • Jojoba oil

SPF equal to 4. Jojoba oil can be used as a hair conditioner, facial cleanser, scar and stretch mark minimizer, anti-acne gel, cuticle treatment, anti-fungal, anti-aging. This oil contains almost all of the vitamins and minerals essential for healthy skin and hair.

  • Argan oil shampoo and conditioner

I didn’t try only oils but I tried shampoo and conditioner as well and below you will find my favorite one! 😍 Let me know what you think about all these products, exchanged experience is always the best way to learn new things.😉

Argan oil helps to hydrate the hair and to restore moisture levels.  This oil is also safe and healthy for colored and keratin-treated hair. I tried this shampoo because Argan oil is knowns to have reparative properties. So I was looking for a delicate and natural shampoo and conditioner to use after a day at the beach and I find this brand. I simply fell in love with it! 😍 After the shower, my hair is soft, shy so easy to comb and not at all dry or frizzy. Moreover, I am very happy to know that after a long day of exposure to the sun my hair will get a little relief.

  • Argan oil, Aloe Vera and pomegranate conditioner

Another amazing natural conditioner that I tried is this one:  Argan oil for hair made by Tree to Tube. I love this brand and their products. This conditioner contains:

  • Organic Moroccan Hair Oil
  • Aloe Vera
  • Coconut Oil
  • Pomegranate
  • Peppermint Infusion.

This conditioner will help to balance the PH of your hair. Moreover, it will make it shy and healthy. This conditioner is amazing against dandruff as well! Simply and amazing product!😍

  • Soapberry Shampoo

Of the same brand, I tried also their natural shampoo. What to say, again the confirmed as a TOP brand. This amazing shampoo contains:

  • Soapberry
  • coconut
  • organic Argan Oil
  • Aloe Vera
  • Chamomile
  • Olive Leaves
  • Lavender.

I love this shampoo because after using it not only my hair is shy and beautiful as well as my scalp is not dry. To me is very important that after the shower the scalp is not dry because as I mentioned before:

“…hair can only be strong when it grows from a healthy and hydrated scalp.”

So girls here you are some products ready to use for those of us who do not have much time to spend making it themselves.😉

Let me know what you think about it n the comment section of course!💬

Some details about the oil we used for our natural hair sunscreens

Now, girls, I will show you the benefits of all the oils we used to create our sun protection products for our hair:

Coconut oil

It is excellent for restoring dry and brittle hair resulting from sun and salt, the greatest enemies of our hair in the beloved summer! This is because it is full of invigorating and regenerating vitamins, which over time, can also lead to the restoration of split ends. Being rich in vitamin E and lauric acid, it has antioxidant and regenerating power. In fact, especially in times of high stress, studies have shown that products that contain the combination of these two elements make hair regrowth possible.

CAUTION!! Obviously, this is not possible where hair loss is linked to genetic causes.

Extra virgin olive oil

It is very useful because it is the only oil that is really naturally produced through only the pressing of olives, without the use of chemicals that are in other vegetable oils. It is also rich in vitamin E, defined as a “beauty vitamin”, which helps the scalp circulation and has antioxidant action. Moreover, being rich in fatty acids, it facilitates hydration. This means bright, soft and silky hair!

Jojoba oil

It has antibacterial properties and can also be used as a natural balm, which will give your hair shine and elasticity. It can also be considered a natural anti-dandruff and goes against the dryness of the skin. Also having emollient properties, it goes to heal damaged and long-neglected hair and adds volume to our hair.

Wheat germ oil

It is rich in vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin B, but also in Omega 3 and Omega 6. All this makes it, of course, perfect for the care of your hair. Its use gives shine to the hair and has a restructuring and detangling effect, which is why it is also suitable for those with curly hair that is difficult to comb.

Rice oil

It is rich in vitamins A, K, E and antioxidants. Thanks to the high protein content, it increases the elasticity of the hair, restores the hair fiber and brings greater volume to the hair, removing split ends and giving your hair a healthier look.

Castor oil

It promotes hair growth and blocks hair loss, eliminates split ends and makes the hair thicker. Thanks to its antibacterial properties, it is also suitable for combating scalp irritations and considerably reducing dandruff.

Sesame oil

It has a high content of fatty acids and Omega 3 and Omega 6, essential for cell renewal and has high antioxidant power. It is also rich in vitamin E, vitamin A and vitamin B, which regenerate the hair, giving the hair shine and softness.

Argan oil

It is rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6, but also in vitamins A and E. Thanks to the high protein content, it has strong moisturizing power and this also means a reduction of dandruff. This oil is also known for its ability to tame frizzy, dry and brittle hair.

It is really important to protect your hair, especially during the summer, and thanks to these small and easy natural remedies, it is possible to do it without giving up anything and enjoying the summer!

I absolutely love using coconut oil on my hair. It helps with my scalp and it makes my hair shiny. I’ve dyed my hair a few times and I went back to my natural colour for 3 years to give my hair a break. It’s back to looking healthy thanks to coconut oil.

I will definitely give one of these DIY recipes a try.

I wonder if any of these work as natural shampoo?

Thanks for an insightful post! 🙂
