To be sure that the sunscreen will have maximum effectiveness, it is necessary to apply the sunscreen/spray on wet hair at least 30 minutes before exposing to the sun or dive into the water.
Hi girls, in this article, I will talk about why you need to protect your hair from the sun during summer.
Well, we can certainly say that if in summer our hair takes on beautiful and completely natural shades, it is only thanks to the sun, but if on one side the sun positively affects our hair, it also damages them on the other hand.

How does the sun damage my hair?
The most frequent disorders that can manifest in our hair in summer are:
1. Dull and dry hair
This discomfort is very common in the summer season. Indeed, with the increase of the temperature, our whole body undergoes dryness, due to poor hydration. A little relief can certainly be found in drinking plenty of water and avoiding foods rich in fat.
To act directly on the hair, masks are extremely useful; the best masks are the ones that among its various ingredients, contain Argan oil. This is the most effective oil to give shine and moisturize the hair during the summer. For those who need immediate remedies, it is possible to use Argan oil shampoos and conditioners, or sprays that don’t require rinsing for a more immediate and excellent result.
You can find some amazing natural hair masks here.
2. Hair loss
It is completely normal that hair loss occurs during the summer season. This is because by exposing the skin to sunlight, there will be an increase in body temperature, which also affects the balance of the skin. Through sweat, this creates favorable conditions for the onset of fungi. Thus, the scalp is weakened, and this leads to greater hair loss. Even excessive dryness and humidity contribute to increased hair loss.
Are you looking for a small relief?
Simple: often moisturize the hair, so as to counteract and stop the dryness of the skin.
To hydratase your hair, as we already mentioned before, natural hair masks or simple natural oil (coconut oil, Jojoba oil, Argan oil, almond oil, olive oil or cocoa butter) are the best solutions.
I use Advanced Jasmine Enriched Coconut Hair Oil. It is natural coconut oil mixed with Jasmine essential oil.
I simply love it because it keeps my hair shiny, strong, and beautiful as well as giving it good jasmine smell that I love! 😍
This oil can be used both after showering on damp hair if we need an after the shower to help moisturize skin and hair and protect the ends.
Otherwise, we can use it on dry hair to make it more easy to comb and make it shine.
3. Allergic dermatitis
It is a non-contagious inflammatory disorder of the skin. This disorder occurs when the skin comes in contact with an allergen, or with substances that are not tolerated by our body. What actually happens is that lymphocytes, which form part of our immune system, attacks some substances which are external to our body and that they perceive as harmful. This will cause a more or less violent inflammation and irritation of our skin.
The symptoms with which allergic dermatitis occurs are swelling, redness, itching and skin reddening of the affected area in milder cases, or the whole body in more severe cases.
It is a very common disorder. The scalp is covered with a white peeling which is nothing but residues of dead cells. Dandruff occurs because since this disorder is accompanied by itching when we scratch our skin in order to get a little relief, we detach the dead cells from the scalp. These dead cells then settle on our hair. When the disorder is not of great magnitude, it is possible to control and limit the formation of dandruff with the use of a good natural shampoo.
Among the major causes of this discomfort are:
• dryness of the scalp, which as we have already said above is accentuated in the warmer season,
• too frequent washing and/or washing with products that are too aggressive,
• excessive production of sebum, much more common in men.
5. Little volume
This problem affects many girls, but especially those who have very fine and extremely smooth hair, which has a so-called ‘flat hair.’ To give volume to your hair, you can use a natural volumizing shampoo or mask: great combination to have a thicker hair. Products that contain linseed oil or products based on rice are also excellent solutions for giving volume to your hair.
7 summer hair care tips
Obviously, as in every article, I will explain to you how to take care of your hair, how to improve the quality of your natural hair and how to take care of your dyed hair as well. But before dealing specifically with a particular type of hair, it is good to remember some important tips that must be followed by all those who want to take care of their hair and keep them at their best.
1. A healthy and balanced diet is extremely important
Although this may seem strange, nutrition is the basis of our body and hair health! I will never say enough that the health of our hair starts with what we eat.
It is essential to follow a diet rich in fruits, raw and seasonal vegetables, fish and especially lean meats, but above all girls, especially in summer, you have to drink a lot of water!
All this is because it is important to promote a diet that brings large amounts of vitamins A, B, C, fatty acids, and Omega 3 to our body. Those 3 elements are essential for the care of our skin, our hair, and our general body!
CURIOSITY: spinach and parsley are foods that contain more vitamin E, so these are the foods that help the most against hair loss.
2. Never forget:
– Hat or headscarf when you expose yourself to the sun
– Protective masks or sprays (of course this is needed for both hair and body)
Excessive exposure to sunlight in summer not only has harmful effects on our skin but also on our hair. This is the reason why it is fundamental to take the right precautions.
Which products should be taken on a vacation?
It is simple; the right products to always have with us are antioxidants and moisturizers. These 2 products will give rigor to dry and brittle hair.
Then, we must always remember that in the summer, we must have with us at the beach, the pool or a day of trekking, a hair product that contains a sunscreen. In order to reach the peak of effectiveness, never forget to always choose products based on natural elements as chemical products also damage our hair.
Finally, the shampoo that we use in the summer, must be suitable for frequent washing; (if you go to the beach or to the pool regularly, you will need to wash your hair in order to remove the saltiness or chlorine from your hair) therefore a natural delicate shampoo it is a must for healthy and beautiful hair.
Of course, if you have time you can make all these products by yourself. 😉
CAUTION!! To be sure that the sunscreen will be completely absorbed and will have maximum effectiveness, it is necessary to apply the sunscreen/spray on wet hair at least 30 minutes before exposing to the sun or dive into the water. In this way, we will be sure that the hair does not absorb too much salt, chlorine or too much ultraviolet rays.
In fact, dry hair tends to absorb much more water than wet hair. As a result, they will also absorb much more salt and chlorine.
Hair masks, in summer, are the best friends of our hair!
Another Indispensable element in the hottest season for nourishing the hair is the application of wraps or oils, directly on wet hair. Among the most effective elements in this field, we have all those products that contain coconut oil and Argan oil, as they are rich in vitamins and minerals.
Twice a week it is good to apply a mask, of course, we have to choose the mask according to our hair needs, for example:
- for dry and weak hair, it is good to use all those masks that contain olive or coconut oil,
- if you have fine and weak hair that tends to break, the best products to choose are those based on Argan oil, jojoba oil, and avocado oil. These oils are very effective for damaged hair.
- The ideal masks for oily hair are those based on extracts of nettle, birch, ivy, black tea, and juniper.

Scarves, hats, bandanas. Objects not to be forgotten on a hot summer day.
Last but not least, it is also very important to protect the hair directly with scarfs, bandanas, and hats. Don’t forget, however, to choose accessories in cotton or straw and light colors. Why?
Because they do not attract sunlight and moreover, they have sunscreen protection equal to 60 percent.
Furthermore, these accessories absorb sweat, and this allows our skin to breathe, which is very important, especially in very hot periods. These small tricks also help prevent moisture from increasing the production of free radicals that cause the aging of our hair.
3. Always rinse your hair with fresh water
One more tip: don’t forget to rinse your hair with fresh water after a swim in the sea or in the pool. Many of you are surely wondering why the sea/pool water damages our hair. Actually, the real problem is not the water itself, but rather in the chlorine and saltiness that our hair adsorbs when we dive into the sea or pool. These, in fact, do nothing but dehydrate and dry our hair.
Of course this does not mean that washing your hair frequently eliminates the threat, but obviously, we all know that in summer it is impossible to avoid it, because chlorine, salt, and sweat always have the upper hand. Anyway, with little precautions it will not be so damaging, in fact, it is enough to rinse the hair with cold water only and apply a small amount of natural balm or conditioner on the tips.
4. Choose the right hairstyle for your summer
Do not tie the hair with too tight tails or hairstyles, because the hair breaks more easily in the summer when they are weak because of the heat and the sun. It is therefore much more effective to opt for soft hairstyles such as a low ponytail or braids. Braids, in addition to being aesthetically very beautiful, do not allow the wind to cause knots to come to the hair.
5. Avoid using hairdryers and hair straighteners
Hairdryers and hair straighteners are a source of high amounts of heat, which is a great enemy to the health of our hair. Indeed this weakens the keratin that is found in our hair, reason why they will be very weak and opaque.
However, the greatest damage will be for those who have curly hair. In addition to having damaged hair full of split ends, they may also lose their beautiful curls shape. If we frequently use hair straighteners on our curls, we risk making the curl less soft and defined.
What other consequences can the heat of a dryer or straightener have on our skin and hair?
• Split ends
• Increase in production of sebum.
All this because the hair should never be exposed to temperatures above 180 degrees (when we use the straighteners, of course, we pass 180 degrees). Moreover, the movement made with the hair straightener in order to make it straight, tears the hair apart.
But, at least in summer, we all know that avoiding dryers or straighteners should not require a great effort since the heat of the season already urges us not to expose ourselves to further sources of heat.
After all, thanks to the natural heat of the summer season, we can dry our hair in a completely natural way: eliminating excess water with a microfiber towel and then letting the hair dry by itself. This means more health for our hair and more freshness for us girls!🥳
6. Say no to bleaching, at least in the summer
Although everyone likes to change the look of their hair, it is very important, especially in summer that we do not bleach and/or dyed it.
The reason is that these treatments weaken our hair that will be attacked and damaged further when we expose ourself to the sun.
Moreover, if you are thinking of cutting your hair to give it a healthier look, it would be much more useful to cut hair after the summer.
After all, if we cut our hair after the summer, when the saltiness, the chlorine, and the sun will not ruin it anymore, we will be sure to eliminate all the damaged parts allowing the faster and healthier growth of our hair.
7. Never forget to make hair wraps
Since summer does not only exhaust our body, but also our hair, it is a good habit to apply a nourishing mask/wraps at least once a week.
Of course, I am talking about a mask made of natural products!🥑🥝
Talking about hair wraps, warm oil wraps are amazing.
Apply the hot oil on the hair (coconut, Jojoba, Almond, Lines, you choose the one that better fits the needs of your hair). After that, massage with circular movements for a couple of minutes(5 minutes massaging will be the best). Once you finished massaging you had, comb it and keep the oil on the hair for at least half an hour. Finally, after 30 minutes you can wash your hair. Keep in mind to have the last rinse with cold water!
A little advice I can give you, I found it very useful to replace my plastic brush with a wooden comb.
Depending on whether you have more or less thick hair, you can choose a wooden comb for wider or narrower teeth.
I personally prefer wooden combs compared to plastic ones because:
• I can comb my hair without breaking or damaging them,
• The wooden combs are very easy to clean,
• They do not create that annoying electrified effect.
Other natural useful products to use in the shower
• Apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, before to apply this product on our hair it is better to dilute them with water. These products will help restore the natural pH in your scalp, and this will make your hair stronger and shinier.
• Milk, which turns out to be a great friend of our hair, since it has great moisturizing power.
Summer hair care tips for dyed hair
Although, as we have already said, dyes and bleaching in the summer are harmful to the health of our hair, there are many girls who cannot do without it. The reason why today I will also give you some tips to preserve the best color and the health of your dyed hair.
The dyed hair, having already undergone treatments, suffers even more from the action of the sun’s rays, since they are already weak. This happens because for the dyes, to carry out their work, they act at the level of the cuticles, which is the layer of protection for the hair. It is, therefore weakened.
The color oxidizes, however, not only because of the sun, but also with sweat, humidity, and rubbing, which is why dyed hair must be nurtured with more care and attention.
The first rule for a perfect dyed hair summer care
HYDRATE becomes the word of order; in fact, it is necessary to apply a nourishing and moisturizing product before and during exposure to the sun, at least every three hours.
CAUTION!! Products with alcohol are absolutely forbidden if you have colored hair. These substances, combined with the action of the sun, seriously damages the hair that will appear excessively dry and dehydrated. Once again, therefore, it is important to emphasize how important it is to carefully choose the products that we are going to use. In this regard, try always to use only homemade products. However, for those who do not have time to prepare DIY cosmetics, I highly recommend buying products that are one hundred percent natural!
Is there a second keyword for dyed hair care?
After a day at the beach, it is a good idea to carefully cleanse the hair. Use a spry or hair mask in order to remove any residual sand or salt, all followed by a detangling post-shampoo. The important thing is that the active ingredient helps in detangling and that makes the hair shiny and reduces the effect of frizz.
A good tip is to alternate between products with a protective action and products with a repairing action. Never forget to choose treatments that are as less aggressive as possible in order to avoid damaging the color in any way.
For those who have colored hair, hats and foulard are essential.
It is excellent to keep the hair tied, especially on hot days. This allows the hair not to absorb excessive amounts of sunlight and prevents chlorine, salt, wind, and sand from sticking to the hair and causing them to lose their color.
When is the right time for dye your hair?
Many girls wonder if it is better to do the colors before the summer or in the end, well, here is the answer!
It is important that we gradually accustom our hair to the heat of summer, which is why it is essential to start with moisturizing, protective, and nourishing treatments some months before the beginning of summer. We must never let the sun find our hair brittle because this would cause even more damage.
In conclusion, if you are wondering whether to make the color before or after the summer holidays, my answer is: absolutely before!
Of course, even when you dye your hair, make sure you also add substances to the hair dye that moisturize and nourish it.
My favorite natural hair color is Henna. I’ve never used it personally, but I’ve used it for my friends. The results were amazing. Henna has an excellent grip on hair, but at the same time, it nourishes and moisturizes it. It is an excellent solution for natural DIY hair color.
As you can see in order to have beautiful, shining, and strong hair, it is very important to protect it, especially in summer!
Are you wondering how you can do these summer hair care products yourself?
In the next article, I will talk about some completely natural recipes for hair sunscreen.
