7 DIY natural shampoos you must try

Last Updated on

Choose the essential oils to add to your natural shampoo based on the needs of your hair!

Having beautiful and healthy hair is not child’s play; the hair requires a lot of care, and if it happens to belong, requires twice the attention.

It can almost be said to be a full-time job.

The first piece of advice I can give you is that the old saying “the inner beauty reflects the outer one” is perfectly true.
For your skin, nails, teeth, and hair to appear, and above all, be beautiful and healthy, they need their daily supply of hydration, minerals, vitamins, and proteins in the right proportion.

We take all of this that our body needs to be healthy and strong from a healthy and balanced diet.

Advise NO 1: WATCH OUT WHAT YOU EAT!!! This is why I refer you to the first article that explains why a healthy and balanced diet can improve hair health. You can find the first article here!

So is it enough just to follow a healthy and balanced diet?

balanced-diet

Obviously, eating “healthy” is not enough.

Starting from the diet, the attention must then extend to other factors:

  • Do I wash my hair too often?
  • Do I use hair driers and such excessively?
  • Do I regularly use regenerating and/or hydrating masks?
  • Do I use regenerating and/or hydrating masks that meet the needs of my hair and my scalp?
  • Do I use natural shampoos suitable for my hair?

Therefore we can easily understand that the care of our beautiful curls goes through a long list of “MUST DOS” and “NO TO-DOS“.

As for the first points, I refer you to the previous articles where you can find useful tips on how to improve the health of your hair, as well as regenerated masks and wraps that adapt to the needs of each type of hair.

For some useful tips about how to take care of your hair in a natural way read here.

If you are looking for an amazing natural hair mask, instead, you will find it here.

How to make DIY natural shampoos

In this article, we will talk about how to prepare DIY natural shampoos.

The attention we give to our hair should not stop even in the shower. Especially because on these occasions, the hair is more exposed and fragile, you should be even more careful.

100% natural shampoos

herbs-for-hair

Of course, the products we are going to use will be all natural, available in normal supermarkets and/or specialized stores or online.

In the beginning, it may seem that all these products cost an eye of the head.  So at first, this may discourage you from trying DIY natural shampoos, you might think that the expenses are not worth the business. Anyway, you should keep in mind, however, that once purchased the products will last for several months. Moreover, the effects will save you from waste even more money in the future in order to cure the damage that we caused today.

In other words,  the benefits of all the precautions that we are putting into practice now will be clear and evident in the future.

As we advance in age, the whole body tends to go through natural regression; this regression also inevitably involves the hair. This will eventually result in more regression with the passage of time, making the hair dry and lackluster.

However, completely eliminating the signs of time is impossible, but with the right care, we can mitigate them, or put an end to excessive negligence.

Returning to the natural shampoos, we will see how to prepare DIY natural shampoos with:

  1. Marsiglia soap shampoo
  2. shampoo one with honey
  3. shampoo with chickpea flour
  4. shampoo with corn starch and honey
  5. herbal shampoo
  6. shampoo white clay
  7. baking soda and cocoa shampoo

One suggestion:

For those who have greasy hair, I recommend a white clay shampoo that purifies, strengthens and makes the hair more voluminous or the bicarbonate and cocoa but which natural shampoo to use and how we will deepen it better in the article.

7 DIY natural shampoos

1.Natural shampoo with Marsiglia soap

diy-natural-shampoo-with-marseille-soap

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 cup of liquid Castile Soap, organic and natural
  • 1/2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Jojoba oil
  • 20 drops of essential oil (in this case you should choose an oil not because it would give a scented note to your shampoo, but you should choose the essential oil according to the needs of your hair).

Therefore, in describing the preparation process, we will see in detail the characteristics of the different essential oils and which problem they could solve.

Don’t worry, preparing this natural shampoo is very simple! 😉

Preparation

In a bowl, combine Marsiglia soap, apple cider vinegar, jojoba oil, water, and the selected essential oil.

Mix it very well and here you go! Ready to use. 😉

Another good suggestion will be every time, before you use it, shake it well.

How to use a natural shampoo

Apply the shampoo on wet hair,  from the roots to the tips, massaging the scalp for a couple of minutes.

After that rinse your hair with warm water to completely eliminate the oil from the head and not have that oily effect once the hair is dry. Of course, remember to use cold water for the final rinsing to give shine to the hair.

Even if it can be difficult to rinse your hair with cold water in the winter, the cold water has beneficial effects on our hair and on the scalp.

Above all, because the hot water is known to help the dilation of the pores of the skin, so after shampooing, it is necessary to subject the hair to a jet of cold water which helps the pores of the scalp and the cuticles of the hair to shrink, preventing dirt and impurities from entering. With this rinse, the hair will remain clean for longer periods, and stay shiny and flowing, avoiding that anesthetic effect “dry bush.” In addition, thanks to the jet of cold water, the cress scales that form the hair are retained inside all products, in this specific case honey, coconut oil, helping to keep the hair moisturized and shiny for longer.

I would like just to let you know that

I will not report this last step (how to use it) for every shampoo. 😊

7 essential oils we can you for our DIY natural shampoos

As mentioned earlier, in this case, we should not choose the essential oil to make a scented shampoo, but we must choose the one that best suits our needs.

That is way below you can find a summary of 7 essential oils and their uses:

(I have to  admit that these seven are my favorite one😁)

1. The essential oil of star anise is excellent against lice;
2. The essential oil of cedar helps to combat hair loss;
3. The essential oil of basil supports bright hair;
4. The essential oil of geranium helps to counteract the typical greasy hair ointment;
5. The essential oil of vanilla helps to soften frizzy hair;
6. The essential oil of carrot is excellent for a nourishing and restorative shampoo; this shampoo is also useful to those who adore the sea but are afraid that excessive exposure to the sun can damage the hair. The carrot indeed has properties that will protect your hair from the ultraviolet rays of the sun;
7. The tea tree essential oil works as a high cleansing shampoo. This oil also combats hair loss.

2. Natural shampoo with honey

shampoo-with-honey

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 cup of Castile Soap, organic and natural
  • 1/2 teaspoon of honey
  • 1/2  teaspoon of coconut oil (you can use any other type of oil like linseed oil, jojoba, avocado oil, olive oil)
  • 20 drops of essential oil.

Preparation

Mix the castile soap, the honey and the coconut oil in a bowl. In the end, add the water. The result should be a fairly fluid mixture that is easy to apply.

It would be advisable to add water gradually so that we can adjust it according to the density of the shampoo. If we want a more liquid shampoo we add more water if we want it denser we will add less water. I personally prefer a shampoo that is slightly thicker.

As the last ingredient add the essential oil of Rose, Jasmine, or Rose according to your needs. The addition of this last one is optional.

What this DIY natural shampoo is useful for?

This second, of our 7 natural shampoos, is great for those with dry, damaged or brittle hair. In fact:

  • coconut oil nourishes and hydrates the hair and scalp
  • honey, for its part, has also nutritional properties but above all emollients making the hair more elastic and smooth.

3. Natural shampoo with chickpea flour

diy-natural-shampoo-with-chickpea-flour-1

Ingredients

  • Two tablespoons of  Chickpea flour
  • water
  • 20 drops of the essential oil that you like most

Optional addition

If you want you can add 1 or 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.

Preparation

Add chickpea flour and perfumed essential oils in a bowl; the addition of this last one is optional. As the first step, mix the flour and gradually add the water.

Finally, the result will be a compound free from lumps and simple to apply. Therefore while mixing you should add the water gradually in order to adjust the density of the shampoo. So if while mixing you notice that the shampoo is too liquid, you can add more chickpea flour, instead if you notice that it is too dense you should add more water.

We continue to mix and add water until the result satisfies us.

What this DIY natural shampoo is useful for?

Cereals and legumes flours are excellent for washing hair, countries like India and Indonesia have been using these flours for centuries to create natural shampoos.
Combining legumes flours with cereals flours is the optimal recipe since the cereals contain vegetable substances with actions similar to soap (these are called saponins) while the legumes contain starch and other vegetable substances capable of removing excess fat and dirt from the hair.
Chickpea flour is the most favorite, but if you have delicate skin, I do not recommend it.
For the most delicate skin, you can use oatmeal, millet or buckwheat flour instead, these flours are also suitable for those who suffer from dermatitis.
In these two cases (delicate skin and dermatitis) I recommend using these flours alone, without mixing with other flours but only with a little water and some essential oil.

For those who do not suffer from these problems, on the other hand, they can occasionally add to the cereal or legume flour they have chosen to use, a spoonful of rice flour. Rice flour is thicker than other flour and acts as a scrub, which is why it is not recommended for delicate skin.

This shampoo cleanses and polishes the hair and is an excellent anti-dandruff shampoo.

4. Natural shampoo with corn starch and honey

diy-natural-shampoo-with-corn-starch

Ingredient

  • A spoonful of cornstarch
  • A spoonful of honey
  • Water
  • Lavender, Jasmine, or Rose essential oil to make the scented shampoo, adding this ingredient is optional. (above you can find the description of 7 essential oil. Hope it will help you to choose the one that better fits your needs)

Preparation

Start combining water and corn starch in a pot and let it cook on the stove.

As the first step, we have to melt the starch, so let it heat until it is completed melt.

Let’s, now, add in the mixture, the honey, the essential oil, and leave it on the fire to make the honey rock. When the mixture is heated, it will thicken, and when it is boiling, we can switch it off and let it cool off. In order to avoid lumps being created during the thickening process, it is advisable to continue to mix until the end.

How to use a natural shampoo

Hey guys before applying shampoo make sure the mixture is cold enough! 😉

What this shampoo is useful for?

This is a detangling, sebum-regulating, and polishing shampoo. The hair will immediately appear docile to the comb, silky, and shiny.

Honey makes hair shinier, repairs damaged ones and strengthens them.

Starch cleanses skin and hair for its part and thanks to its emulsifying properties the hair will be softer, moreover, the corn starch is excellent for oily hair as it has absorbent properties. Curly hair, on the other hand, will be more defined without being weighed down.
This shampoo is very liquid can be used as a spry for curly hair.

5. Natural shampoo with herbs

diy-natural-shampoo-with-rosemary

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water
  • 28 grams of dried rosemary and dried rose petals
  • 125 ml of liquid Castile soap
  • 3 tablespoons of Aloe Vera Gel
  • ¼ teaspoon of Jojoba oil
  • 30 drops of Rosemary essential oil

Preparation

In a bowl, combine the dried rosemary and dried rose petals and add boiling water. Let everything rest for 4/5 hours.

Finally, once the water is cold, we can filter the mixture and add the Castile soap, Jojoba oil, Rosemary essential oil, and Aloe Vera gel.

Let it rest overnight.

What this shampoo is useful for?

The natural shampoo with rose and rosemary water is perfect for those with greasy hair:

  • rose water is, in fact, helps eliminate that annoying oily hair effect due to excessive sebum production. In addition, rose water is also excellent for combating itching and irritation of the scalp thanks to its soothing properties
  • Rosemary, on the other hand, has antiseptic and stimulating properties. For these reasons, it is excellent for those with hair that is heavily stressed by everyday treatments (washing, hair dryers, etc). Rosemary helps regeneration and therefore the growth of the hair, it is an excellent anti-dandruff and helps prevent gray hair. This herb also has degreasing properties so it is excellent for those with greasy hair to use as an ingredient in shampoos or infusions

6. Natural shampoo with white clay

diy-natural-shampoo-white-clay

Ingredients

  • Water
  • Two tablespoons of white clay
  • 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil (you can use any other type of oil, e.g., linseed oil, jojoba, olive oil)
  • Essential oils perfumed as desired (above you can find the list of my favorite essential oils)

Preparation

Start adding the coconut oil to the white clay and mix it very well.

As a result of mixing, you should get a mixture similar to wet sand. Therefore, in order to make this mixture more easy to apply, we gradually add the water.
The result must be a thick compound, which is, however, easy to apply, so please add the water according to the density of your shampoo. As well if you wish to obtain a more liquid shampoo add more water otherwise add less water.

If you think that your shampoo is too liquid you can simply keep on adding white clay until you get the result that you wish.

Finally, add the essential oil if you wish.

What this natural shampoo is useful for?

This shampoo is very suitable for those who have greasy hair, in fact, clay helps to dull the hair and absorb the oils produced by the skin. This reduces the usual oily appearance of the hair and restores its natural shine.

Moreover, the clay gives volume to the hair and this can be noticed already from the first wash.

7. Natural shampoo with baking soda and cocoa butter

diy-natural-shampoo-with-baking-soda

Ingredients

  • Water
  • A generous tablespoon of baking soda
  • A spoonful of cocoa butter (optional)
  • Essential oils (optional) – you can find the description of the essential oils above.

Preparation

The last but not list of our natural DIY shampoo will be baking soda and cocoa shampoo.

First of all, we should combine baking soda, cocoa, and water in a bowl. Following we gradually add water while we mix it all together.
As a final result, we should get a  fluid and easy to apply the shampoo. Accordingly, we have to add water to get the density of the product that we want.

As the last step add the essential oil you like more to use.

What this natural shampoo is useful for?

This shampoo will help eliminate that annoying greasy effect of greasy hair, in fact, the baking soda has an absorbing effect which will help to absorb the naturally produced oils from the hair, and give them a shiny and silky natural appearance.

Cocoa, instead, is an antioxidant and contains proteins that we know are very important for our hair. Because of its thick texture, it acts as a scrubs in our shampoo.

Even cocoa butter is often used for hair beauty, or better to create beauty products in general. Such as? This product is famous for its emollient and soothing properties, it is used as a mask before the shampoo or as an ingredient for the shampoo itself; this ingredient nourishes the hair softens them and prevents split ends.
As it is a very fragrant and protective property as we have seen, it can be applied in small quantities on the tips after a shower, instead of using the usual oils like coconut oil, jojoba, etc.

Beware that cocoa may darken your hair a little!

Recommendation:

When we choose an essential oil as well as the scent of shampoo, we must look at the properties of each and choose the one that best suits our needs. This does not mean that you cannot decide to use the mixture of more than one essential oil. For example, deciding to mix the essential oil of rose because we like the smell with the essential oil of vanilla to make our hair, usually frizzy, more docile to comb and with a healthier and brighter appearance.

What matters of course, as in all situations is not to overdo it with the doses; 20 drops of the product are enough, but if you really want to be specific with the dosage 3% of the total weight of the compound to which we have decided to add the essence is fine. For very strong oil such as thyme, cinnamon, etc., the dosage stops at 0.5% or a maximum of 1% of the total weight of the compound.
